Deep in the interior of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sankuru Province is one of the last places on Earth where equatorial forest stretches unbroken to every horizon. The BOIS KASAI concession — formally granted in 1996 — covers 275,025 hectares of this extraordinary landscape.
The Lubefu River and its tributaries wind through the concession, feeding into the Sankuru River and ultimately the Congo River — the world's deepest river and the lifeblood of Central Africa's rainforest. This is not a degraded or fragmented forest. It is intact, ancient, and alive.

"This forest has stored carbon for centuries. It is time the world recognised its value."
— BOIS KASAI, Sankuru Province, DRC
Sankuru Province sits at the geographic centre of the Congo Basin — the world's second largest tropical rainforest, covering over 3.3 million square kilometres across six countries. Unlike the Amazon, which has lost significant cover in recent decades, the Congo Basin remains largely intact — and Sankuru is among its most pristine regions.
The BOIS KASAI concession is classified as tropical moist forest — a dense, multi-layered ecosystem with a closed canopy, rich understorey, and extraordinary biodiversity. Trees reach 40–60 metres in height. The forest floor receives filtered light year-round, sustaining a complex web of plant and animal life found nowhere else on Earth.
The Lubefu River, flowing through the heart of the concession, creates riparian corridors of exceptional ecological value — supporting fish species, amphibians, and the forest mammals that depend on permanent water sources. The river basin is a critical component of the forest's hydrological cycle and its long-term carbon storage capacity.
Closed-canopy equatorial forest with trees reaching 40–60m. One of the most carbon-dense terrestrial ecosystems on the planet.
A major tributary of the Sankuru River, flowing through the concession and sustaining rich aquatic and riparian biodiversity.
Home to bonobos (found only in DRC), forest elephants, okapis, and over 400 bird species — many endemic to the Congo Basin.
The Congo Basin recycles vast quantities of water through evapotranspiration, regulating rainfall patterns across Central and West Africa.
The BOIS KASAI concession is not just a forest — it is a verified carbon asset. Here is what that means for investors and partners.
Estimated Carbon Credit Potential
~12M
tCO₂e
Approximately 12 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent — estimated over a 30-year REDD+ project lifetime based on forest biomass assessments and standard REDD+ methodologies.
The concession qualifies under REDD+ — the UN-backed framework for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. This is the gold standard for tropical forest carbon credits, recognised by voluntary and compliance markets worldwide.
BOIS KASAI is pursuing VCS certification through Verra — the world's most trusted voluntary carbon crediting program. VCS credits are purchased by Fortune 500 companies, sovereign wealth funds, and institutional ESG investors.
Forest conservation in the Congo Basin is among the highest-impact nature-based climate solutions available. Protecting one hectare of Sankuru forest prevents the release of tonnes of stored carbon that took centuries to accumulate.
The Congo Basin absorbs an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of CO₂ per year — more than the entire European Union emits. The BOIS KASAI concession is a direct contributor to this planetary carbon sink.
